The 2026 Summer Downtown Los Gatos Residents Should Actually Plan Around

If you have lived here more than a few years, you already know the rhythm. Wednesday jazz at Town Plaza. Sunday concerts on the Civic Center lawn. A drink at Forbes Mill or Tasting House before or after. Nothing about that outline is new.

What is new is what happens between the songs and the tables. In February the Town Council changed the rules of the sidewalk. Six restaurants that were dark storefronts eighteen months ago are now open, and most of them are run by people who either grew up here or already earned their reputation one town over. The concert calendar is the same shape, but the block wrapped around it is not.

The ordinance most residents have not read

On February 17, 2026, the Town Council adopted Ordinance 2382, formally allowing an Entertainment Zone within the C-2 Downtown Zone. Once a special-event permit activates the zone, patrons of licensed establishments inside the boundary can carry alcoholic beverages out of the premises and remain in the designated public area, provided the business has also registered with the state Alcoholic Beverage Control department.

That is a small paragraph of code with a large effect on how a Wednesday evening feels. The Plaza already fills up for Jazz on the Plazz, and residents have been walking between the Plaza and their favorite room on Santa Cruz Avenue for years. The ordinance removes the awkward moment where a glass gets abandoned at the door. It codifies what people were doing informally and gives the operators along the block a reason to program around the crowd rather than compete with it.

The Wednesday-and-Sunday spine, refreshed

The two anchor concert series are back on their traditional footprint. Jazz on the Plazz opens its 2026 season on July 8 at Town Plaza Park on Montebello Way, Wednesdays 6:30 to 8:30 PM, produced by the nonprofit Los Gatos Music & Arts. The lineup runs eight Wednesdays and closes with Tony Lindsay, the longtime lead vocalist for Santana, and his Soul Soldiers.

Music in the Park continues its Sunday afternoon slot on the Civic Center Lawn, 5 to 7 PM, free, in a series the Town has produced since 1988. The 2026 schedule:

The lineup itself is the interesting number. Six Sunday concerts. Eight Wednesday concerts. Fourteen evenings between mid-July and late August where the center of downtown fills up on a predictable schedule. Businesses have had a full year to plan menus, patio hours, and staff around those fourteen dates, and this is the first summer they can do so under the new ordinance.

Who is actually behind the new doors

The easy story about Los Gatos dining is that a wealthy suburb attracted new operators. The more accurate story is that the new operators are people with prior claims on the town.

• Heritage Pub and Chop House occupies the second floor of the La Cañada Building, a spot that sat vacant for roughly seven years after Los Gatos Bar & Grill closed. Owners Walker and Kristi Pearce-Percy are both Los Gatos natives. Kristi partnered with Executive Chef Yvonne Khananis, who runs Polenteria directly downstairs. The menu is pub food from Ireland, England, and Scotland alongside American classics, and the back of the space holds a game hall with arcade cabinets and shuffleboard plus a banquet room that pushes total capacity to 180.
• Dar Restaurant and Bar is the Los Gatos expansion of a Saratoga restaurant run by brothers Milad and Chef Esam Shaqir. The menu draws from the Levant, Italy, and Morocco. The room has a full bar, an indoor dining room, and a large patio with a fireplace, which positions it for the exact kind of long summer evening the Entertainment Zone is set up to reward.
• Gardenia Los Gatos took over the Palms space in a historic Victorian. Co-owner Carol Wang runs it as a coffeehouse by day and a French-Asian fusion restaurant by evening under Executive Chef David Intonato, with live music on Fridays and Saturdays and a spring-summer menu that launched May 20.
• A Greek-Anatolian restaurant from chef Coskun Abik is opening at 25 East Main Street in the former Sidecar Modern Tavern room. Abik is the operator behind Blind Butcher in the Castro and Dunya Bistro in Nob Hill, and his Los Gatos lease started at the beginning of August.

Two more concepts are still in permitting. Vicinity, a fine-dining project first reported by the Mercury News in January 2026, will join the upper tier of downtown alongside Forbes Mill Steakhouse and Tasting House's caviar-and-Champagne room at 368 Village Lane. Pergamon Bistro, a Turkish concept from owner Seyyat Zira, is planned for 309 North Santa Cruz Avenue near Oak & Rye and Pedro's.

What ties the list together is not cuisine. It is that the target block of North Santa Cruz Avenue and its immediate side streets is filling vacancies with operators who require a knowledgeable audience to appreciate. That is a very different kind of retail street than one built on national chain leases, and it changes the calculation for a homeowner deciding whether to walk downtown on a Tuesday instead of driving to Santana Row.

A resident's Wednesday between 6 PM and 10 PM

The plan writes itself once you name the pieces. Park once, then move.

Arrive at the Plaza around 6:15 with a chair. The first set at Jazz on the Plazz starts at 6:30 under the redwoods. Around 7:45, before the second set peaks, walk two blocks north on Santa Cruz Avenue to PintxoPote at 424, order three or four Spanish tapas, and hold the table long enough to hear the tail of the concert through the open door. If the special-event permit for the Entertainment Zone is active that evening, carry a glass with you as you go. Close the evening at Heritage Pub upstairs in the La Cañada Building or on Dar's patio with the fireplace lit. Neither existed as an option two summers ago.

The block has been quietly rebuilt to absorb a longer evening. The ordinance is the permission slip. The operators are the reason to use it.

Sundays run on a different clock. The Sunday Farmers' Market at Town Plaza runs 9 AM to 1 PM every week rain or shine. Purple Onion Café on Main Street near the Los Gatos Creek Trail entrance handles the post-market coffee and pastry window. Southern Kitchen, no reservations, absorbs the brunch line. Music in the Park picks the day back up at 5 PM. The full arc, market to concert, is a route residents have been walking for years, but the middle of the day has more places to stop than it did last summer.

What to hold on the calendar for September

The two dates worth blocking now are back-to-back. Taste of Los Gatos, the Chamber's downtown street festival, is on Saturday, September 19, from 12 to 5 PM. Wristbands cover bites at 27 downtown restaurants and pours from 20 local wineries, and a craft beer tap truck in front of U.S. Bank at 127 North Santa Cruz Avenue pours from Loma Brewing and Hapa's. All tasting wristbands sold out before the festival last year, which is either an interesting logistical detail or a small case study in what a downtown looks like when it has fourteen concert evenings of built-up traffic behind it.

One week later, on September 26 and 27, the Los Gatos Art & Wine Festival returns to the Civic Center lawn at 110 East Main Street. The Kiwanis Club of Los Gatos has produced this festival since 1971. Two hundred regional artisans, live music across both days, no admission fee.

Between the concert series, the ordinance, and the operator turnover, this is the first summer in a while where downtown Los Gatos is measurably different from the one residents remember. It is worth showing up to see what it looks like in practice.
